India is an agricultural nation — with nearly 60% of the population dependent on farming for their livelihood. However, one of the biggest challenges faced by farmers is the rising cost of irrigation and the unreliable supply of electricity in rural areas.
To address these issues and promote sustainable rural development, the Government of India launched a visionary program called KUSUM Yojana (Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan).
This scheme not only empowers farmers with energy independence but also helps them earn additional income through solar power generation.
At Solar Green Technology, we are proud to be part of this green revolution by helping farmers install KUSUM solar power plants across Rajasthan and India.
The KUSUM Yojana is an initiative by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) launched in 2019.
Its primary aim is to provide farmers with affordable solar energy for irrigation and enable them to generate income by selling surplus power to the grid.
The program focuses on replacing diesel and grid-powered pumps with solar-powered irrigation systems, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and ensuring continuous power availability for agriculture.
Provide clean and free power for irrigation to farmers.
Reduce dependency on diesel and grid electricity.
Increase farmers’ income by allowing them to sell excess solar energy.
Promote rural employment through solar project installation and maintenance.
Contribute to India’s renewable energy mission by adding solar capacity at the grassroots level.
The KUSUM Yojana has been divided into four main components to cover different types of projects:
Under this component, farmers or developers can set up solar power plants ranging from 0.5 MW to 2 MW capacity on their barren or unused land.
The generated electricity is sold directly to the local DISCOMs at a pre-fixed tariff, providing a steady source of income for 25 years.
Benefits:
Additional income through power sales
Utilization of non-fertile land
Promotes local grid stability
Farmers can install standalone solar-powered irrigation pumps with a capacity of up to 7.5 HP to irrigate their fields independently.
These pumps eliminate the need for diesel and grid power, offering free irrigation during daytime using sunlight.
Subsidy Pattern:
60% subsidy (30% Central + 30% State Government)
10% farmer contribution
30% financed by bank loan
This makes solar pumps highly affordable for small and medium farmers.
Farmers with existing grid-connected electric pumps can solarize their systems under this component.
The solar plant powers the pump during the day, and any excess energy is exported to the grid — generating additional income for the farmer.
Example:
If a 5 HP pump consumes 20 units per day but generates 30 units via solar, the remaining 10 units are sold back to the grid.
Under this component, large-scale solar projects can be developed by cooperatives, farmer groups, or private developers in partnership with DISCOMs.
These are MW-level projects that add significant capacity to India’s renewable energy grid.
Since its launch, the KUSUM Scheme has transformed the rural energy landscape:
Over 30 lakh solar pumps targeted for installation.
10,000 MW decentralized solar plants to be developed on farmer land.
Reduction of 2.8 billion liters of diesel annually.
Carbon emission reduction: Over 10 million tons of COโ every year.
This scheme is turning farmers from energy consumers into energy producers, making agriculture more profitable and sustainable.
With solar-powered pumps, farmers can irrigate fields anytime during the day without worrying about power cuts or expensive diesel.
Farmers can sell the surplus power generated to DISCOMs and earn extra income throughout the year.
By generating their own power, farmers reduce their dependency on government-subsidized electricity.
Solar power promotes clean and green farming practices — helping India move toward a sustainable future.
Unproductive or unused land can be used for setting up solar power plants — turning idle land into a long-term income source.
At Solar Green Technology, we have been actively working in the implementation of KUSUM solar projects across Rajasthan and nearby states.
Our role covers everything from technical planning to execution and maintenance.
โ
Site Survey & Feasibility Study — Assessing land suitability, sunlight, and grid connection points.
โ
System Design & PVsyst Analysis — Creating efficient designs for maximum energy generation.
โ
Project Development — Managing documentation, subsidy processing, and PPA agreements.
โ
Installation & Commissioning — Executing high-quality solar projects using Tier-1 materials.
โ
Operation & Maintenance (O&M) — Providing AMC services for long-term performance.
We handle projects ranging from standalone solar pumps to MW-scale solar farms under the KUSUM framework.
Client: Ramesh Chaudhary (Nagaur, Rajasthan)
Project: 10 HP Standalone Solar Pump under KUSUM Component B
Before solar:
Monthly diesel cost: โน8,000–โน10,000
Frequent irrigation delays due to fuel shortages
After solar installation by Solar Green Technology:
Monthly savings: โน9,000
Maintenance cost: โน0
Increased crop yield due to timely irrigation
Payback period: Less than 3 years
Now, Mr. Chaudhary enjoys free power for irrigation and is proud to contribute to India’s renewable energy mission.
| System Type | Total Cost | Government Subsidy (60%) | Farmer’s Share (10%) | Bank Loan (30%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 HP Solar Pump | โน4,80,000 | โน2,88,000 | โน48,000 | โน1,44,000 |
With such an attractive structure, even small farmers can easily adopt solar without financial burden.
While the scheme has been largely successful, some challenges remain:
Delay in subsidy disbursement in certain states.
Lack of awareness among rural farmers.
Need for proper O&M services to ensure long-term plant health.
However, with increased awareness and professional support from companies like Solar Green Technology, KUSUM is becoming the backbone of India’s rural solar revolution.
